Break Me Down (Loving on the Edge #8.5)

by

The New York Times bestselling author of Call on Me invites you to discover the thrill of control as one couple wrestles for power in and out of the bedroom…

Samantha Dunbar needs to forget Gibson Andrews. When he trained her to be a domme, she experienced just how hot things could get with the sexy executive. She was ready to hand him everything—including her heart. But Gibson backed away, declaring them incompatible. He’s a dominant, and Sam’s no submissive.

But after an attack shakes Sam to her core, Gibson tracks her down at her family’s rundown farmhouse and makes her an offer. He’ll stay the week and be hers in every way—a helping hand for the renovation and a willing lover in her bed. He swore he’d never give up control to anyone again, but he hasn’t been able to touch another woman since Sam. Maybe a week alone with her will cure him of his relentless craving.

But one taste only makes them want more, and Sam and Gibson are drawn in deeper than ever. The man who won’t give in has just met the girl who won’t give up…

My Break Me Down Review . . .

Once again Roni Loren did NOT disappoint with her latest novella.  We meet Gibson throughout the series and know he's got some inner demons.  We also know that he adores his friend, Sam.  So much that he helps her train to be the dominate she needs to be, by being her bottom.

"I'm not trying to be her sub. I'm just trying to be there for her."
Grant eyed him.  "Sometimes the line between those two can get pretty blurred."
Sam has her own demons, which could be part of the driving need for her to be dominant.  But its also part of who she is.  What she does know is that Gibson, fills something in her that she needs, but won't compromise to get it, even if it means walking away.

Gibson's torn between what he needs, and what he should be.  Though, what he truly knows is that Sam needs him and he has to find a way to compromise.

"A scared Sam is not a good Sam.  She'll lash out at anyone who tries to help. . ."

Sam, has a recent run in that throws her off, causing her to run.  Gibson tries to be what she needs to help her through this time, but sacrifices himself in the process.

"And because there's nothing that turns me on more than a guy who's tough enough and confident enough to give up control for me.  I am a dirty and twisted and filthy-minded mofo.  I want to hurt you.  I want to make you beg.  I want to take over your body and make every part of it my own. . ."

With everything that Gibson is, he wants to be different, but his past is owning him.  Causing him to hurt himself and Sam in the process.

"Of course I would, baby.  If I could change it, I could have you.  Be the kind of man you deserve."

Gah! My heart hurt for these two.

I love you, Gibson Andrews.  And now I have to let you go.

For Gibson, to find himself, he has to face his past demons head on, if he wants a future with Sam.

Now, will you kidnap me and make me pay for being such a dumbass?  I would be much obliged.

For Sam, she wants Gibson.  She needs Gibson, but she won't sacrifice.  Not anymore.  Even though it may gut her.  She NEEDS him to choose her, or it just won't work.

" . . . I've been forced on people my whole life, Gib. I need to be chosen this time.  I need to be worth the cost to someone."

Being true to oneself is the key to most happiness, just as long as we are brave enough to face our flaws, and our personal demons.

She didn't want the guy he always thought he should be.  She wanted the man he was.  Flawed. Real. Hers.

For Gibson to be truly happy, he needed to be truly broken.  And Sam's the key to this success.

She'd broken him without even lifting a finger.

Since it was a novella it was quick and not as deep as it could have been, but the connection between these two was powerful.  Their pasts were holding on to them with a firm grip, but they had to fight to break free.

4 Need to be broken thumbs up!

“Someone’s dogging ya,” Kidd says as he nods behind me. I can hear my name being called, but I don’t want to look because he’s likely up to something. The fact that my name is being called means nothing, since the kids are always trying to get us to sign things, give them a bat during the game or even look at them. It was a thrill when it happened to me so I know what it’s like to get attention from your favorite player, let alone any player.
“Just a fan, I’m assuming,” I say, shrugging him off and focusing on Mackenzie’s at bat.
He shakes his head and starts laughing. “A super fan,” he says, nodding behind me again. “You might want to turn around.”
“You might want to pay attention to the game. Mackenzie could hit a foul ball and smack you in the tallywacker.”
“Jesus Davenport, just turn the hell around.”
I roll my eyes and finally give in, but only halfheartedly. I look over my left shoulder and see no one calling me and over my right to find the same thing.
“Don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Kidd swings the bat a few times before he stops because Mackenzie has a hit and is now on first base. “Turn all the way around, Davenport. Stop being a bitch.”
I do as he says and I’m met with a pair of green eyes that I have burnt into my memory. She’s sitting behind our dugout in the center seat. She stands and points to her shirt. The front of it says, “I’m sorry”. I can’t help the stupid ass grin that is plastered all over my face.
I lean forward, resting my hands on the edge of the dugout. “Are you busy after the game?”
“No,” Daisy says with a smile.
“You are now,” I say, not caring that I’m probably jumping the gun and assuming she wants to see me. It’s not a guess; I know she does. “Stay right there and I’ll come get you when the game is over.”
Before I know it, we’re on the Jumbo Tron with hearts all around our picture. She covers her face and I turn back to the game, only to turn around and wave my hat at the section she’s in. They roar with cheers and start chanting my name.
We win, nine to one. I had a few more base hits and some RBI’s to add to our run count. Every Renegade player had at least one base hit. It’s odd when that happens, but we take it and run with it when it does. As soon as I enter the clubhouse the reporters are there. They call my name and instead of going to them, they come over to me and shove their microphones into my face as soon as I sit down.
“Ethan, you made a pretty big display of affection today during the game. Do you care to tell us about your girlfriend?”
“Yeah, sure,” I say, running my hand through my hair. “I’ve been in love with her for as long as I can remember. She means everything to me.” Suddenly their microphones are even more in my face.
“What’s her name?”
“Baseball!”
I wish I had a camera at this exact moment so I can capture their expressions as they all deadpan at my answer. They’re stupid if they think I’m going to say anything about Daisy. We have a long road ahead of us and the last thing we need is the media hounding us. I do enough stupid shit that brings us plenty of attention. We don’t need any more.
The reporters don’t like me much after that answer, not that I can blame them. Kidd punches me in the shoulder and winks at me.

I wanted to jump.
He made me fall.

As a celebrity, I lived in the public eye, but somewhere along the way, I’d lost myself in the spotlight.

Until he found me.

Sam Rivers was a gorgeous, tattooed stranger who saved my life with nothing more than a simple conversation.

But we were both standing on that bridge for a reason the night we met. The secrets of our pasts brought us together—and then tore us apart.

Could we find a reason to hold on as life constantly pulled us down?

Or maybe there’s only one direction to go when two people fall in love at rock bottom—up.

Excerpt One
“Thank fuck!” Sam said, swinging the door open before Devon even had the car in park.
“Oh, this isn’t my place. We’re just dropping Devon off. I’m about twenty minutes across town?”  I tossed him a sugary smile then boldly shifted my hand into his lap, purposely brushing the bulge under his denim.
Grabbing my wrist, he narrowed his eyes and called out, “Devon, I’m gonna need to borrow a bedroom.”
I burst out laughing as Devon cursed loudly.
“Fine. This is my place. No smoking inside though,” I snipped as I climbed from the SUV.
“You better have some seriously exciting extracurricular activities to keep me distracted, then.”
“I have Ping-Pong!”
“Not exactly what I was thinking.” He mischievously cocked his head. “But I guess paddles and balls are as good a start as any.” Dipping down, he hoisted me over his shoulder. “Point me to the Ping-Pong table, my lady.”
I didn’t. I laughed hysterically as he carried me inside. Then I directed him to my bedroom instead.
I heard Devon locking up the house as Sam deposited me on the bed.
“Jesus. This view.”  He pushed the curtains back. “Why the hell would you ever go up to the bridge when you have this here?”
“I don’t know,” I answered, pulling my earrings off and placing them on my nightstand.
Oh, but I knew. It might not have been what had originally sent me up that bridge, but it was why my feet carried me back every night. And that very reason was currently standing in front of me with entirely too much clothing on.
“You want a beer?” I asked, sliding my shoes off.
“Nah, I’m good.” He faced me, and I could tell something was off with his demeanor. He didn’t inch any closer. Instead, his lips were tight and his eyes uncomfortably flashed around the room.
It suddenly didn’t feel like Sam standing in front of me at all.
He felt like a stranger who had just come face-to-face with Levee Williams.
Damn it.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Are you about to freak out?” I whispered, nervously moistening my lips.
He shoved his hands into his pockets. “I’m not really sure yet. But I’m gonna need you to stop licking your lips long enough for me to figure it out.” His mouth cracked into a wide grin, and my shoulders relaxed.
Now that was a flash of my Sam.
“Want to tell me what’s going on?” I asked.
“It’s just… I think this is the first time I’ve realized that you’re some big-time celebrity. I might be in over my head here, Designer Shoes.”
“I just make music, Sam.” I returned his smile and very slowly prowled in his direction. “Imagine how I feel though. You’re Samuel Nathan Rivers. A tough, tattooed furniture designer who makes six figures a year but is too afraid to tell his mommy he votes democratic.” I giggled as he frowned humorously. Stopping in front of him, I dragged a fingernail down his chest then teased the waistband of his jeans. “Have you considered that maybe I’m the one who’s in over her head here?” I leaned forward to nip at his lips, but he spun us around.
“Excellent point. I’m going to need you to try really hard to keep it together, Levee. You haven’t even seen my six-pack and huge cock, yet.” He smirked and attempted to return my nip, but I stepped out of his reach.
“You brought beer and chicken?” I feigned excitement.
That one corny joke was all it took to bring my Sam back completely.
With a sexy smile and a coy shrug, he seductively backed me toward the bed. “What can I say? I like to be prepared.”
“Clearly,” I breathed.
He moved in close so his lips were only a centimeter away, but for as much as I wanted him, it was agonizing. “Clearly,” he repeated, his smoky yet sweet breath breezing across my mouth.
His strong arm looped around my waist, tugging me against his chest, while I stared into his hooded eyes, eagerly waiting for him to make a move.
Any move.
Every move.

My Fall Up Review . . .

After reading the Wrecked & Ruined Series by Ally Martinez I jumped at the chance to read this book.  Don't get me wrong it was a great book, but it was hard to read for me, because right now someone dear to me is suffering through some mental health issues and suicide tendencies.  Which made this book hard to get through some times as it was way too close to home.

"Maybe she didn't like the bionic cock?  You never know."  I laughed without humor.  "Don't be ridiculous. Everyone likes that."

However, if you were to take that out of the equation, then it was great.  The story was great.  Their struggles were real, and their banter was fantastic.

Levee had it all, well it looked like it to the public, but really she was a mess inside.  Sam Rivers, has a huge heart and with his past he feels like he's failed the people he loves.  Immediately with Levee, he wants to make a difference in her life and help her, because he knows that she could be something great and special within his life.

They may have met on not the best circumstances, but its also the bond that helps them struggle through together.

"Sam, you have no idea what you're getting into."
"No one ever does.  It's the beauty of taking risks."

Sam, is a big ol' sweetie, and you can't help but love him.  Levee was still super strong, even though parts of her broken.

" . . .You were never a distraction to me, Sam. You were always my reprieve."

The story felt real.  Their struggles were important and a good topic that needs to be addressed more often.   All the characters are great, which helped to make the story so much more

Adored the book!
