Resisting an irresistible force wears you down and turns you out.
I know.
I’ve been doing it for years.
I may not have a musical gift of my own, but I’ve got a nose for talent and an eye for the extraordinary.
And Marlon James – Grip to his fans – is nothing short of extraordinary.
Years ago, we strung together a few magical nights, but I keep those memories in a locked drawer and I’ve thrown away the key.
All that’s left is friendship and work.
He’s on the verge of unimaginable fame, all his dreams poised to come true.
I manage his career, but I can’t seem to manage my heart.
It’s wild, reckless, disobedient.
And it remembers all the things I want to forget.

"Ryan continues her streak of amazingly accessible and authentic romantic fiction. Grip is a bold and unapologetic look at interracial romance and does not shy away from any of the ideals and prejudices that most of us are too polite to acknowledge - head on- amidst one of the sexiest, and most provocative true love romances Ryan has penned to date. Break out the fans folks, Grip is aptly titled and sure to make you need a grip! -- Sheena, Smexy Books

In 8 years, Marlon James will be one of the brightest rising stars in the music industry.
Bristol Gray will be his tough, no-nonsense manager.
But when they first meet, she’s a college student finding her way in the world,
and he’s an artist determined to make his way in it.
From completely different worlds,
all the things that should separate them only draw them closer.
It’s a beautiful beginning, but where will the story end?
FLOW is the prequel chronicling the week of magical days and nights
that will haunt Grip & Bristol for years to come.

My Grip Review . . .

So we first met Bristol and Grip aka Marlon in the Soul series where Bristol is Rhyson's twin and Grip is Rhyson's best friend.   Then in Flow we got to see why Bristol has such a cold shoulder towards Grip.   And now in Grip we get to the meat of the story.

It starts off with family drama where are reminded on how much of a bitch Rhyson and Bristol's mom is.   She tries to jam her choices down Bristol's throat causing her to build up a wall to protect herself in fear that she is like her mother.

"You are just like me, maybe worse."  she says.  "You need too much.  And you'll love too much, too, if you're not careful.  I fell in love with the wrong man a long time ago, and people like you and me, we don't know how to stop."

Because Grip and Bristol's life is so intertwined with her managing him plus being Rhyson's best friend, she can't get away from him.  And she also can't let go of her grudge as well.

" . . . There's a lot of things I need to focus on.  What might have been between us if you hadn't lied isn't one of them.  Let's forget all the other stuff."

Then Bristol makes a HUGE mistake and thankfully Rhyson is there to make her see some reason.

"You're braver than that, Bristol.  You're the most fearless person I know.  And you let the threat of something keep you from what you really want?"

I was frustrated a bit because the story line because it was so similar to Kai and Rhyson's where the heroine has a huge shield around them and pushes the potential of love away because of something someone in their family has previously done.   Not because of something that they have gone through but the fear of what if instead.  If it hadn't already been done in the first series it wouldn't have bugged me as much.

Then the shield dragged on for quite a long time, maybe even too long.

~ By then I understood the curse I carried in my blood.  Loving too deeply, too fiercely, too wholly.  A love like that for the wrong man would ruin you.  ~

Thankfully there was good banter and Grip has the patience of a saint.

"Did we have sex?"  Grip cocks one dark brow, his lips not even twitching.
"Do you feel like you could walk straight?"  I nod and move my legs experimentally to check for partial paralysis.  "Um, yeah."
"Then there's your answer."  He shrugs.  "We couldn't have had sex."

Where the story gets more involved is the interracial element on how we so often don't see the other side because that is not our normal.  Here we got to see the struggles on making their union work not only in a public relationship being Grip is a famous rapper, but also because of their mixed races.

~ I've taken years to build a fortress against this man.  I've learned to resist him.  And he has over and over, time and again, put his heat on the line.  Worn it on his sleeve.  Persisted when I turned him away.~

Even though Grip had made some poor choices as well,  he really did deserve a medal for his perseverance and patience.

"I'm afraid you'll cheat on me, take advantage of me, and that I won't know how to stop wanting you.  I'm afraid I'll settle for less than I deserve because I'd take whatever you'd give me."

"I want to hear the whole sordid story of why you've put me through all this shit all these years.  I really do."  (And boy did he deserve the story for the shit Bristol had put him through).

Then we get to the heart of the matter of why Bristol did what she did and I was able to get less frustrated with her,  plus we also got to the part of no more angst, which is always my favorite

~ For the girl who had to beg for scraps of affection, for attention from the people she's loved the most, hearing him say that sets my fears free.  ~

3 . 5 Patience and perseverance for the win thumbs up!

thumbs upthumbs upthumbs up . 5
